From ritual to must-have: Why we love slippers

As soon as we get home, we slip into our favourite slippers - a small everyday ritual that unites protection, warmth and a sense of security. Yet behind this feel-good moment lies a long history: early on, people looked for comfortable, hygienic and warming footwear for their own four walls. Whether slippers or cabin slippers - the variety is vast. The question of origins is fascinating: did open-back slippers (mules) come first, or did higher-cut house shoes take the lead? One thing is certain: our need for comfort and relaxation has made slippers indispensable companions in modern everyday life.

Historically, slippers are closely linked to “normal” footwear. Nomadic peoples crafted early prototypes from natural materials; in Egypt, straw and leaves were used - leather was later added. Fascinatingly, slippers from the 2nd century were found in Egyptian tombs. Wool was also a favourite in antiquity: breathable, robust and thermoregulating - qualities that still convince today. Among the Romans, the soccus, a heel-less, slipper-like shoe, enjoyed great popularity. From the 15th century onwards, slippers spread across Europe; at first they were mainly worn by women - a trend that soon became democratised.

Many names, one feeling: in German-speaking regions they’re called Schlapfen, Schluffen, Finken or Babuschen - the latter comes via French from the Arabic “Bābūsch” for footwear. Even idioms like “Pantoffelheld” show how firmly slippers are rooted in everyday life. Internationally, there are interesting customs: in Japan you’ll often find special toilet slippers. And while terms evolve - for example, what used to be defined as slippers with a closed heel - one thing remains constant: wool as the ideal fibre. It keeps you warm, is breathable and maintains a balanced climate - the perfect basis for modern feel-good slippers.
