6 1/2 foot care tips for well-groomed feet

Our feet accompany us through our daily lives and are often subjected to heavy strain. To keep them in good condition, it is worth paying regular attention to them. What care measures can be useful for the feet? We have put together some tips on the subject of foot care.

1. DAILY CARE

It is advisable to wash your feet every day. It is usually sufficient to soap your feet while showering, rinse them off and then dry them thoroughly. Dry feet are less susceptible to moisture, which can lead to skin problems. If you have difficulty bending down, you can get creative and dry your feet with a hairdryer. If you place particular importance on foot care, you can apply a moisturising foot cream after showering to keep the skin supple.

2. TAKE A FOOT BATH

A foot bath can be a pleasant way to care for your feet. The water should not be too hot – ideally no more than 38 °C. Salicylic acid can be added to soften the skin. Feet should not be soaked in warm water for longer than 10 to 20 minutes, as this can cause the skin to soften excessively. For slightly cooler baths, the bathing time can be extended to up to 30 minutes. Important: Dry your feet thoroughly after the bath!

3. SHORTEN NAILS

Similar to fingernails, it is advisable to trim toenails regularly. The ideal time to do this is after a foot bath, when the nails are slightly softer. A nail file is particularly suitable for trimming evenly, even if this method is a little more time-consuming. Alternatively, nail clippers or nail scissors can be used. The methods can also be combined – first trim the nails with clippers or scissors and then file them down with a nail file. Nail oil can also be applied to the nails and nail beds. For hygiene reasons, it is advisable to clean nail scissors and other tools regularly.

4. CARE FOR CALLUSES

The areas of the feet that are particularly stressed are often thickened by calluses. This thickening actually serves to protect the foot in areas that are subject to stress. However, many people still want to do something about the rough surface. There are various methods for doing this.

A pumice stone is particularly gentle on the skin and should be used on moistened feet, ideally after a foot bath. It should be rubbed over the calloused skin in circular movements. For those who do not have time for foot baths, there are also callus files that can be used on dry skin. Special creams with active ingredients such as urea and glycerine can also soften the skin on the feet. Callus removal socks from the chemist's are another option, although these can be too harsh for some skin types. For sensitive skin, pumice stone, a file and/or appropriate creams are recommended.

5. CARE FOR CHAPPED SKIN

If you have cracked skin, it is important to keep your feet well moisturised. Moisturisers containing ingredients such as urea and ceramides can help. Regular care can help to strengthen the skin barrier.

6. MASSAGE YOUR FEET AND DO FOOT EXERCISES

Since our feet are under strain every day, a foot massage can be a pleasant experience. Body oil or foot cream are suitable for this. The massage should cover all areas – the heel, arch, ball of the foot and toes. The massage should always be pleasant and not too intense.
Foot exercises can also be beneficial, especially for feet that are under a lot of strain. There are different exercises for different foot shapes and needs. If you experience any discomfort, it is advisable to consult a medical professional.
